Hi, Friends. I have a very very special item up for sale today. This is a Pattachitra ( Patachitra ) scroll painting from West Bengal, India. It is a rare and beautiful item that you might usually see in a museum or cultural center. It is one of my prized possessions, but I have decided to put it up for sale due to the virus and the resulting economic downturn. I hope to find it a good home. My photos show the entire scroll in all its glory.
From August 1999 to August 2000, I was an art student in India. For some of that time I was based at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan (to the north of Kolkata,) West Bengal, India. I spent a lot of my time roaming around the countryside on my Hercules bicycle and drawing everything. I was sometimes invited to stay in the homes of people I met along the way. They were very kind. It was during this time that I was introduced to the family that made this scroll, and I spent several days with them learning their painting craft and style. At the end of my time with them they presented me with this scroll. I felt that it was too big a gift, so we negotiated a price that seemed fair to us both and I asked the artist to sign his work.
Details of the scroll and condition: The scroll consists of 9 sheets of paper stitched together and attached to a yellow backing cloth. Each sheet of paper measures 14" w. x 21.5" l. (35.5 cm w. x 55 cm l.) This makes the total dimensions of the scroll 14" w. x 16' l. ( 35.5 cm w. x 4 m 88 cm l.) The scroll overall is in excellent condition, save for a small amount of paint flaking at the very top of the scroll in the two corners and a tiny bit of flaking on the sides of the top section.
