    Description

A very nice original antique vintage wooden sewing box kit, 10.5" by 7.25" by 3.25", circa 1890. The exterior is designed with a color printed hinged cover depicting bluebirds in flight, while the sides are wood-grain painted with a cardstock bottom. The key plate is goldtone, the
key is original and the lock mechanism is non-working.
The interior is lined with a lovely paper with a gold print design, showing just minor paper loss and a few scattered stains. Inside is divided into three compartments and has a built-in pincushion of purple fabric with some needles and pins. The rear compartment has a removable cover with a purple velvet panel that has a decorative edging and a finger hole for lifting it. There are loops for sewing tools: a steel bodkin, a small steel embroidery scissors stamped "foreign", a bright brass thimble perfectly round with no holes, and a bone stiletto tool.
    Included is a vintage
    tape measure
circa 1920 depicting Old Man of the Mts, Franconia Notch, NH, fully functional with a push button retractable feature, made in USA, just missing the end pull tab. There is one similar to this pictured on p. 98 of Helen Thompson's book, Sewing Tools and Trinkets.
In addition, there are four vintage hand-crocheted coasters, an out-of-round silver thimble sz 10, an old steel thimble, an attachment for a spool of thread which serves as a pincushion and prevents the thread from unwinding, a wooden spool of Coats & Clark thread, and a card of novelty buttons made by JHB International.
This sewing box has been part of my personal collection for many years and I would love to share this unique piece of sewing history to another collector.
